Will there be a mess?No mess, no fuss is a policy we strongly stick to here at Clean Sweep - Power Chimney Sweep. We use multiple sheets to protect your carpet and flooring, and we have additional sheets for furniture that maybe in close proximity to the fireplace. We use sponge blocking systems for woodstoves and chimney openings to prevent the spread of soot and dust coming out into the property. On larger openings such as inglenooks we use soot sheets to sweep through. A vacuum cleaner will be in operation through out the entire sweeping process. A mindful, clean and thorough job will be provided.

Do you sweep thatched cottages?Yes we do! It is advisable in some cases that an on site CCTV inspection is needed to check that the flueliner is in good operable condition.

Do you remove birds nests?Yes we do, as long as the nest is vacant. Jackdaws are the common culprit who start nesting in March/April and vacate around July/August. It is illegal to remove or damage any nest that is currently active. We strongly advise not to smoke them out as it will hit the blockage and come back into your property. "If there are currently active nests in the chimney, they must be left and fires not lit until they vacate their nests. This is for your safety regarding the risk of chimney fires as well as it being an offence to intentionally take, damage or destroy any active wild bird's nest in the UK under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981." - RSPB Once the nest is vacant we can removed the nest and advise on an appropriate cowl to be fitted so the issue doesnt happen again as Jackdaws have a habbit of renesting in the same place. Please note that removing a nest can be very physical and time consuming job as well as hard wearing on our equipment.

My stove is smoking back what should i do?There can be a variety of different reasons why your chimney or woodstove is smoking back. Most often if you're lighting the first fire of the year cold air has fallen down the chimney creating an atmostpheric block. Try to chase the cold air out by heating your appliance slowly. Try not to burn to much paper as this will produce a lot of smoke. In some cases if you have a large fireplace this can affect the draw, for example: A flue that’s too small, a chimney that’s too short, or a lintel (horizontal support above the firebox opening) that’s too high—any of these could result in a weak draft and a smoky fireplace. Some times raising the fire basket by a few centimetres can improve the draw, or alternatively having a smoke deflector fitted can be a added benefit. If the fireplace seems to kick back smoke only when or after it rains or snows, you may have a water seepage issue. To avoid a wet flue, make sure you have the correct cowl fitted. Another indication would be blockage due to birds nesting in the chimney which can produce damp through the wall of your house. As well as the structural condition of the chimney itself may require repointing. These are just a few examples, but dont hesitate to get in contact if you have any concerns.

When would i require a CCTV check?A CCTV inspection enables us to determine the integrity of your flueliner or chimney much more accurately. This service should also be utilized after clearing a bird nest, to be sure the debris has been removed completely, or after a chimney fire, to determine if there has been any residual damage. You may want to take a closer look at your chimney if you notice problems such as smoke entering the upstairs bedroom or mortar joints or brick work falling down the chimney. These problems can be an early sign that something is structurally unsafe. What benefits do i get from having a CCTV inspection? Ensures your chimney is safe to use. Hightlights any issues early which could save you worry and money for costly repairs. To ascertain if it would be cheaper for the chimney to be lined than repaired. Provides evidence to insurers on the overall condition. We offer two types of service for our CCTV inspections: On site inspection with verbal findings after sweeping. Full servey reports detailing any defects found via written report and accompanying video footage. Please get in touch to enquire today.
